Fire Writer Friday - Charlotte Phillips

Cowboy Marvin has been listening to our Written Fireside story and was curious to learn a little more about the

To appease my curious goat those who have authored a part of the round robin story have kindly agreed to stop by, one each Friday, and answer his questions.

Stopping by this Friday is

Howdy Ms. Phillips, I'm so happy you came to visit.

Are you a night owl or early bird?

Neither really. I don’t do early mornings and late nights kill me. If I really had to pick one, I’d go for early mornings - sometimes if I’m up against it I get up early and that first hour on my own can be more productive than double the time later in the day.

I often am up before the rest of the herd too, it's very productive.  I get my choice of brush. Tell me, Batman or Robin, who would you be?

In my working life, Robin. I’m a very supportive person, quite organised and I’m great at following orders. In my family it’s different. DH likes to think he’s Batman, but the kids and dog know it’s me!

Your husband thinks he's the Caped Crusader?  That's odd.  I though it was Jolly Llama.  Hmm.  Anyway, if you traveled to the big city would you take a taxi or a limo if they were the same price?

A limo! Who would choose a taxi?? The idea of sprawling in luxury with champagne on ice works for me.

Sprawling in luxury would be awesome.  Do you think they'd spread fresh straw inside?  It's so comfy.

You should try it.

Moving on, the last song you listened to was?

Mirrors by Justin Timberlake. He is my guilty pleasure. I love all his stuff.

Notice how handsome men & certain goats
wear black cowboy hats?

How about your taste in movies, do you like scary, comedy, romance or adventure?

A mix of scary and adventure. I love a good thriller. My favorite film is Jaws, such a classic.

Favorite film recently is Argo - funny, gripping and brilliant.

In my house the DH is a massive fan of sci-fi and tries to convert me but I prefer gritty reality to aliens.

Goats are all about gritty reality.  We are very down to earth.  Tell me what season do you like best, Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall?

Fall. I love the smell of bonfires, soups, stews, Halloween, and the odd gorgeous sunny crisp day on which you really need to walk a dog to fully appreciate it.

Seriously a goat is way better than a dog and we love to go on walks, especially when there is tasty brush to munch along the way.  Would you tell me a place you've never been to but would love to visit?

There are so many - I've only ever been out of the UK on package holidays to the Med! I would have to say New York. It’s on my bucket list.

This goat prefers the country where there is more good stuff to eat.  Have I mentioned my love of blackberries?  The whole plant is delicious.

So tell me would you swim in the ocean or a pool?

Pool. I have this thing about swimming in the sea - all I can think is ‘what the hell is in here with me?’ I blame my father for letting me watch Jaws at age 11.

Personally I hate getting my hooves wet but I love to play and a slide is tempting.

How would you go camping - sleeping bag under the stars, tent, trailer, fancy RV, or a hotel with room service?

Hotel with room service. I don’t do creepy crawlies or communal toilets/showers. I like fluffy towels and luxury!

Room service?  That's where someone brings food to where you bedded down right?  I get that at the barn.  Good stuff.

One last question.  A goat walks through your door right now wearing a cowboy hat.  What does he say and why is he there?

"Howdy! Hand me that WIP and I’ll get you right out of trouble!"(spoken in Texan accent for some reason).
He could be the WIP Fairy, of whom I am in dire need at the moment!

The second in her Do Not Disturb series for Harper Impulse. These are a series of standalone funny, sexy stories linked by the same backdrop – a luxury boutique hotel in London.

Did Someone Order Room Service?

Game. Set. Match.

Has American Tennis Pro Matt Stanton finally found his match in uptight hotel employee Layla Jones? Checking into the hotel to escape the fallout from his most recent media scandal, Layla could be the perfect distraction from staring at four walls and watching Pay Per View. But for her own reasons Layla detests all things celebrity and winning her over won’t be as easy as he thinks.

About Charlotte:

Even as a child I loved stories. When I wasn't reading them, I was making up my own, usually with myself as the heroine. I started out with the Famous Five, then in my teens I discovered Sweet Dreams - my first encounter with category romance. I re-read 'The Popularity Plan' by Rosemary Vernon until it fell to bits.

Eventually I graduated to Mills & Boon novels. I have always loved the sheer delicious happy-ever-afterness of them and as a student in my early twenties I dabbled with writing my own story. It was never finished, and I did nothing with it until a couple of years ago when I stopped work to have my youngest daughter and I found time to dust off the manuscript. I finished it and sent it off to Mills & Boon .
It was finally rejected after two rounds of revisions but I was spurred on and soon after that I entered Mills & Boon's global writing competition New Voices 2011. I never believed I was in with a chance and no one could have been more shocked than me when I ended up in the final 4.
After the competition, I was lucky enough to be offered the chance to work with a Mills & Boon editor on a new story, developing my skills as I went along. That story was my debut novel 'Secrets of The Rich & Famous'. When it was finished Mills & Boon RIVA offered me a contract and to my absolute excitement it was published in December 2012. Since then, I have continued to write books for Harlequin KISS/Mills & Boon RIVA.
I've continued to experiment with my writing and I am so excited to also now be writing shorter-length contemporary sexy stories for Harper Impulse, a brand new romance imprint from Harper Collins. The first of three linked stories, 'Your Room Or Mine?' will be published on the 9th May 2013.
My writing is fueled by tons of coffee and years of daydreaming during my string of office jobs. All my books are the kind I love to read - funny, engaging it-could-happen-to-you stories and if they brighten someone's day, that's good enough for me :0)

I live in Wiltshire, England, where I squash my writing in between looking after my family, who have been taught not to notice that I'm rubbish at housework. I also have a bit of an addiction to American TV shows and timesuck social media games and it's really a miracle I get anything done at all.

Fire Writer Friday - AJ Nuest

To appease my curious goat those who have authored a part of the round robin story have kindly agreed to stop by, one each Friday, and answer his questions.

Stopping by this Friday is

Howdy Ms. Nuest, I'm so happy you came to visit.

Are you a night owl or early bird?

Early bird all the way... which is weird because I'm married to a night owl.

Married to an Owl?  Cool.  In my experience they hang out in the barn rafters and catch those dirty rats after my sweet oats.  Good to have around.  So tell me, Batman or Robin, who would you be?

Robin.  He's much more fun than Batman.  Not so serious.
And I love to say, "Holy time warp, Batman!"

Goats are always up for a good time, just saying.  Where was I?  Oh yeah if you traveled to the big city would you take a taxi or a limo if they were the same price?

Plush leather seats, a mini bar and all that space? A limo for sure. Besides ,I can't remember the last time I was in a cab that contained breathable air. They always reek. LOL.

Leather?  That makes me uncomfortable for some reason but if the mini bar has Applejack I'm there.   Moving on, the last song you listened to was?

Good Time by Owl City -- it totally revs me up.

You really have a thing for owls don't you?  How about your taste in movies, do you like scary, comedy, romance or adventure?

Adventure (preferably of the fantasy/sci-fi kind) with an element of romance.

I think this must be common among humans.
Serenity is watched a lot at my people's home.

Tell me what season do you like best, Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall?

Fall! I love sweater weather. It's the best. Plus the apples are in and my daughter and I can make fresh apple sauce. YUM!

APPLES! I love apples.  They are crispy and juicy and sweet, nom nom nom.  Oh excuse me I got carried away.  Would you tell me a place you've never been to but would love to visit?

England/Ireland/Switzerland/Germany -- pretty much anywhere in the UK.

Stonehenge,

Newgrange,

Chateau de Chillon,

and Neuschwanstein Castle

all would be awesome to visit but you'd have to cross an ocean to do so which brings me to me next question.

Would you swim in the ocean or a pool?

Neither. I like my bodies of water hot and bubbly and in the tub.

Are you taking about a hot spring?

Oregon has quite a few. I've heard they're relaxing.

How would you go camping - sleeping bag under the stars, tent, trailer, fancy RV, or a hotel with room service?

Well, the last time I went camping was in an RV, however I LOVE tent camping. I love it. Tent camping for me, hopefully with a screened top so I can still watch the stars!

Yes ma'am there is nothing like sleeping under the stars. I do so often.

One last question.  A goat walks through your door right now wearing a cowboy hat.  What does he say and why is he there?

Just like all the other animals in my life, he's there to eat.
He walks up to me and repeats, "Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom" until I sit back from the laptop, walk over to the cabinet and give him a cookie. He then curls up with the two dogs and two cats near my feet and joins their mid-morning nap.

Do you have apple cookies?

Oatmeal is good too.

No reason, just curious.

 You live in Indiana right?

True love does not exist…or so event planner Tessa Adams learns the day she gets jilted—twenty-four hours prior to walking down the aisle. One-night stands are much easier, and with sexy philanthropists like David Brenner, how can she resist? Now if she could just get rid of him. Had she known the biggest event of her career would be working for David’s father, she would have cut and run. Instead, she’s unwittingly become a part of his parents' plan to destroy his life-long dreams. Will sacrificing her love protect him or be the ultimate betrayal?

Wealthy and gorgeous, David Brenner seemingly holds the world in the palm of his hand—his generous heart and infectious smile are just two in an endless stream of attractive qualities. But the one thing he wants, he can’t have—a repeat of the passionate night he spent in the arms of a skittish Tessa Adams. His family’s far-reaching power threatens to crush their dreams.

To prove his love, he would risk everything…but will the return of her ex-fiancĂ© be their final undoing?

Excerpt:

“Dibs.” He extended his hand.
Frowning, she accepted his greeting. “Dibs on what?
“No.” He chuckled. “That's my name. Or well, actually, my nickname. Either way, it's what everyone calls me.”
“O-o-okay...” The guy definitely had the smolder covered...and those incredible ice-blue eyes. Yikes!
“And you are?”
“Oh, Tessa Adams.” She laughed.
“And everyone calls you...?”
Her frown returned. “Tessa.”
“Oh.” He scanned her face. “No nickname, huh?”
“Not that I recall at the moment.”
He pressed his full lips together as if restraining a smile, eyes twinkling with merriment, and handed her the notepad. “Here's your confirmation number. The room's at the Waldorf Towers over on Park.”
Two suites at the Waldorf? In this mess? What was he, a wizard? “Wow, great. Thanks so much for the help.”
“Glad to be of service.” He retrieved his briefcase and started down the corridor, abruptly stopped, and peered at her over the perfect slant of his shoulder. “And don't worry, Tessa, I'll think of a good nickname for you.”
She offered him a blank stare. “Hey, knock yourself out.”
Mischief danced along his lips before a grin broke free and he continued down the hallway.
“What a whack job,” she muttered.

About AJ:

Born in northern Wisconsin as the middle child of three girls, I now call Northwest Indiana home, along with my loving husband, two beautiful children and several pets.

Contrary to the cliche "middle children are always ignored", I preferred a solitary lifestyle growing up, and would often disappear for hours with either a book or journal, happily content behind my closed bedroom door. I can't remember a time when I didn't write. Either poetry, song lyrics or a daily diary entry, jotting down my thoughts has always come naturally to me. Each year I found a blank book waiting beneath the Christmas tree, and after I left home for college, I bought them myself.

Early on I knew I would need to get bumped around a bit before starting a writing career. So I spent the years working as an Executive Assistant in several different fields, experiencing all the fun (and heartache) a single girl can have in the big city. Soon after, I met my husband, got married and started a family, moved to Indiana and together we started a business from our home.

My days are now filled with assisting my husband, and when time allows I write, once again happily content to be left alone with a book or journal - only now my journal is a Toshiba laptop. The rest of the time I'm busy gardening, cooking, fixing boo-boos, attending sporting events, tutoring, chauffeurring, cleaning, doing laundry, and snuggling.

Fire Writer Friday: Romy Sommer

Cowboy Marvin loves listening to the Written Fireside stories and is having great fun learning a little more about the Fire Writers

Graciously, those who have or will author a part of the round robin story have agreed to stop by, on certain Fridays, and visit with my curious goat.

Stopping by this Friday is

A lady who considers Friday the 13th a lucky day

Howdy Ms. Sommer, thanks for stopping by.

Are you a night owl or early bird?

Night owl - I suck at mornings!

All the more blackberry leaves for me *cough* I mean to say Batman or Robin, who would you be?

Batman

FYI a goat makes a fabulous sidekick.  Um... a taxi & a limo are the same price, what’s your choice?

Why go with seats someone else might have barfed on when you can travel in style for the same price?

And there is plenty of room for four legged friends.  Moving on, the last song you listened to was?

Lady Antebellum - Golden

Sorry to say rock is more my style, just the way I roll.  How about your taste in movies, do you like scary, comedy, romance or adventure?

I like a good comedy or adventure but Romance beats them all hands down every time (as long as it has a happy ending).

Happy endings make me want to leap in the air like this little guy.

Tell me what season do you like best, Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall?

100% Summer

I lean toward Spring myself, leaves are so tender and juicy then.

Would you tell me a place you've never been to but would love to visit?

Right now, the Caribbean, since I've just finished a story set there.

Awesome!  Friends tell me that's a great place to go swimming.  Would you swim in the ocean or a pool?

Pool (I'm a bit of a wuss and those big waves scare me).

How would you go camping - sleeping bag under the stars, tent, trailer, fancy RV, or a hotel with room service?

Hotel with room service every time

Hmmm.  One last question.  A goat walks through your door right now wearing a cowboy hat.  What does he say?

          "Blame it on the Mojitos"

I can't wait to hear that story!

What happens in Vegas…
Waking up to the bright lights of Vegas in an unfamiliar penthouse suite, cocktail waitress Phoenix Montgomery finds she’s covered from head to foot in gold glitter and not alone – aside from the empty bottle of champagne, there’s a mystery man in the shower and a huge sparkly ring on her finger!

Stays in Vegas?
There’s no denying Max Waldburg’s demi-god sex appeal but commitment-phobic Phoenix doesn’t do relationships. Only it seems her new husband (agh!) has other ideas…he’s trying to keep that ring on her finger and his wife firmly back in his bed. The only question on her lips is – why? Or maybe, why not?

Excerpt:

I wish I were dead. Phoenix moaned and pulled the pillow over her head to block out the blinding light and the clamour of rain. If only her head would just explode and get it over with.

At least the pillow seemed softer this morning. And it smelled nicer than normal too. A fresh citrus scent that quickened her blood.

Hang on a minute. Rain? In Vegas?

She peeked out from under the pillow. Oh my…

Not her room.

This room was at least twice the size of her entire motel apartment, and way better furnished. Correction: this wasn’t just a room; it was a palatial hotel suite. Through the double doors she spied a living room.

She sank back on the pillows, which seemed to be dusted in gold glitter. Perhaps she’d already died and this was heaven. Though she highly doubted heaven would want Phoenix Montgomery. Not that she’d been a particularly bad girl, but she’d never made much effort to be particularly good either.

And she’d certainly seen and done a few things a more conventional person might quail at. This being one of them.

She covered her eyes. Blocking the sunlight streaming in through tall windows at least helped the ache in her head.

Sunlight? Then that wasn’t rain…

Instantly awake, she turned her head and identified the source of the sound of running water: not rain, but a shower running.

She wasn’t alone.

Terror clutching her heart, she lifted the crisply starched sheet. Oh hell…

Beneath the sheet, she was stark naked, aside from yet more gold glitter. And not alone, in a room she didn’t recognize.

What the hell had happened last night?

Through the aching blur, she fumbled for memories. She and Khara had got off work not long before dawn, and they’d gone out for a drink as they often did at the end of a shift. They’d chosen a pool hall away from The Strip, the kind of place that wasn’t in any tourist brochure. With the sedatives the doctor had prescribed to help her sleep, Phoenix hadn’t had that much to drink. Besides, she could handle alcohol. Unless...

There was only one thing that could get her drunk.

She closed her eyes, grasping for the memories. They’d danced to music from an old-fashioned juke box and played a couple of games of pool. She’d even won a little money off a guy with tattooed arms who couldn’t believe he’d been bested by a girl.

And then there’d been a man who bought her a drink…
The bathroom door opened. Phoenix sucked in a breath and opened her eyes.
Yeah, that man.
God, but he was drool worthy. Especially wearing nothing but a fluffy white towel wrapped around his hips. He definitely worked out. Until now she’d believed six packs like that were the results of air brushing in magazine spreads. This set of abs was one hundred percent real.
She forced her gaze higher, over the tanned chest, broad shoulders, up to meet a pair of startling blue eyes in a face framed by overlong fair hair.
“You’re awake. Good. I’ve ordered breakfast.”
She was so not hanging around for breakfast. She cleared her throat. “Where are my clothes?”
He pointed toward the living room. Clothes lay strewn across the floor and, yep, there it was, the only thing that could get her truly and embarrassingly drunk... a bottle of champagne, empty and lying on its side on the floor.
“How are you feeling?” The demi-god’s voice matched his face; deep, masculine, with a hint of amusement and a faint Germanic trace.
He perched on the edge of the bed. He smelled as good as he looked, clean and slightly lemony. Just like the pillow. Her blood all rushed south again.
She could only imagine how much fun he’d been up close and personal. Pity she had absolutely no memory of it.
“Did we really…?” She waved a hand at the bed, and her naked body beneath the sheet that she now held clutched to her breasts. And her heart stopped.
Was that a ring on her finger? On her left hand?

About Romy:

I’ve always written stories for myself, but didn't even think of being an author until I realized that being over thirty and living in a fantasy world was a little odd. Writing those same stories for other people makes it a lot more acceptable!

By day I dress in cargo pants and boots for my not-so-glamorous job of making movies but at night I come home to my two little Princesses, in Johannesburg, South Africa, where I live, and I get to write Happy Ever Afters. Since I believe every girl is a princess, and every princess deserves a happy ending, what could be more perfect?
