Courage. She needed courage to get through this night.

She’d barely taken her first sip of champagne and surveyed the lush surroundings of the lounge on the main deck when she felt the presence of a Crowley approach her.

“Roni Milano?” Familiar cool blue eyes widened with recognition.

She met his gaze with her own, determination lending her temporary confidence. “Hello, Lucas. It’s Veronica now.”

“Veronica. You look great.” His voice was deeper than she remembered.

“All grown up.” She twirled the end of curl. “A long way from pigtails and freckles.”

“And food in your hair.”

His wide smile caught her off guard and she laughed. “Yeah. I’m much better with a knife now.”

He sobered quickly. “I will definitely keep that in mind.” He grabbed a champagne flute from a passing tray and drained it to the last drop. Veronica’s spine shuddered when his eyes fixed on her again – narrowed with suspicion. His stance stiffened. “Are you here with one of our guests?”

“Why? Couldn’t I possibly be an invited guest on my own?” She heard the defensiveness in her own voice, but she refused to be swept aside. He might have those same gorgeous eyes, but he wasn’t Davis. And she wasn’t going to leave without seeing Davis.

“Of course not. I know the wedding list.” He leaned in close to her ear to whisper. “Sorry. I have a very vivid picture in my mind of the last time I saw you.”

“Of course you remember me kissing your brother.” She knew he’d meant to shock her, so she winked back. “You were the one who interrupted us.”

“Then tell me you’re not here to pick up where you left off.”

“So this is my hello, Lucas?” She deepened her voice to mimic his. “Wow, you look great but you shouldn’t be here. Davis is getting married this weekend.”

“Precisely. And you’re not the one who’s wearing the bridal gown.”

“You really don’t trust me.”

“You avoided my question.”

“I batted my eyes at the big bouncer at the door.”

“Hardly your style.”

“Lucas, most girls grow out of their tomboy phase.”

His eyes moved slowly down her body with obvious pauses over each of her assets. He trailed his fingers across the smooth silk hugging her hips. “Only you would wear black to his wedding.”

Before she could respond he grabbed the invitation from her hand to inspect it.

“It feels authentic.” He still sounded skeptical.

“I didn’t forge it.”

“But you could. You made a helluva convincing fake I.D. in high school so you could follow Davis into the dance clubs.”

She laughed bitterly. “You remember all the best things about me.”

The Dress
City of Bath, England 2015

Cait is curious to know why Matthew has returned
for their friends’ wedding so early.

“I don’t understand,” she said, following him into a recently opened cafĂ© that she had been meaning to try. The interior was dark but welcoming, with a Natural World theme that she liked.

“You don’t understand that I didn’t want to be the kind of best man who flies in, gives a speech, and then flies out again?” Matthew asked quietly.

Anger came swift and loosened her tongue. “I find it hard to believe that a schedule that saw you unable to get back for Guy’s birthday, or his and Rosie’s engagement party, could suddenly free up enough time for you to arrive well before the eleventh hour. Aren’t you supposed to be navigating rapids in the jungle and filming the results, or something?”

She joined the queue, which was naturally much shorter than the one she had left and risked another glance at him. He had always had this way of looking at her. As if he knew something about her that she didn’t know herself.

It was so arrogant, Cait thought. So annoying. So- “Oh my God,” Cait whispered, with a sudden inkling as to exactly why he had found the time to come back more than three weeks before their friends’ wedding. She licked her lips and pushed the words out. “You’re here because of me?”

Two years drifted away and she was back in the apartment Guy and Matthew had shared, drunk and upset and pouring her heart out to a man who showed absolutely no sympathy and who, the following day, when she was sober and completely mortified, wouldn’t even let her recant.

What the hell did he think she was going to do? Stand up at Rosie and Guy’s wedding ceremony and object?

“You really think I’m that person?” she managed to get out, every cell in her body ready to reject his answer.

Matthew stood staring down at her, his eyes searching hers, and then confidently he said, “No. I don’t think you are that person.”

The relief racing through her had her swaying a tiny step towards him.

“Not if I won’t let you be,” he added.

England, 2015 and when Cait bumps into Matthew, back from his travels for their friends’ wedding, the spark between them flares instantly.

The Waiting Game

Eve's Bio: Growing up in locations like Botswana and Venezuela gave me quite the taste for adventure and my love for romances began when my mother shoved one into my hands in a desperate attempt to keep me quiet during TV coverage of the Wimbledon tennis finals!

When I wasn’t consuming books by the bucket-load, I could be found pretending to be a damsel in distress or running around solving mysteries and writing down my adventures. As a teenager, I wrote countless episodes of TV detective dramas so the hero and heroine would end up together every week. As an adult, I worked in a library to conveniently continue consuming books by the bucket-load, until realising I was destined to write contemporary romance and romantic suspense myself. I live in leafy Surrey in the UK, a book-devouring, slightly melodramatic, romance-writing sassy heroine with my very own sexy hero husband!

Celia nibbled her lower lip. “Tell me honestly, Simon. Do you think I should give up the house party? Send my regrets to Lady Stone and miss the wedding?”

“Hell, no.”

“Don’t pussyfoot about hurting my feelings!” She shuddered. “I’m afraid if I don’t stand up to Uncle on this matter, we’re likely to find ourselves at the altar before Christmas.”

“He seems to have entirely forgotten that he was initially opposed to your going.”

“Really?” Her eyes brightened. “He won’t stand in my way?”

“It seems not. It was brilliant of you to make it a sporting event.”

“I can hardly take credit for you proposing a wager – but if it accomplishes my purpose, I suppose I must be grateful for your suggestion.”

“That reminds, me, Silly – we never set the stakes.”

She shrugged. “Fifty guineas?”

“That’s hardly worth the bother. What happened to your confidence? Of course, you’re putting a lot of faith in this so-called fairy godmother. What if she turns out to be a witch instead?”

She tipped her head to one side. “You should want me to win, Simon, because my victory will set you free too. If I lose, Uncle Rupert will redouble his efforts to marry us off to each other. Very well – let’s make it five hundred. That’s a small price to pay for your freedom.”

“That sum should be enough to keep your mind focused,” he said dryly. “Done.”

She held out her hand. “And don’t forget the public apology you promised when I win.”
