Goats solve their differences head-on. They don’t give the silent treatment or yell, they butt heads, and then it’s over.

Cowboy Marvin has learned humans resolve issues differently especially those romantically involved. His curiosity sparked, he has invited authors to stop by on Fridays and share the first fight from one of their books.

First Fight Friday

with a scene from

Best Man for the Bridesmaid
The second book in a Harlequin Romance duet—The DeFiore Brothers.

A recipe for dating DeFiore men…
Take two Italian brothers with a pinch of playboy charm
Add two American sisters with a liberal dash of feistiness
Simmer under warm Italian skies until perfectly combined
Serve with lashings of love.

Stefano DeFiore is proud and reserved — he likes the quiet life. So planning a wedding for his celebrity chef brother is his idea of hell. But when bold and colorful Jules Lane enters his world— chief bridesmaid and sister to the bride —Stefano decides to take his best-man duties seriously…including doing all he can to make Jules’s time in Italy simply heaven…

In the scene below Jules has just flown into Rome, Italy to help plan her foster-sister’s Italian wedding. When something urgent comes up, the groom’s brother, Stefano, is sent to pick her up at the airport. They are on their way to meet with the happy couple and along the way, they are getting to know each other…

The silence stretched out.

The longer it took Stefano to answer her, the more concerned Jules became. With her sister’s happiness at stake, Jules couldn’t let the subject drop. Not without some answers.

She turned in her seat in order to gauge Stefano’s expression. “Why do you want them to delay the wedding?”

He sighed. “I just think they are rushing into this without thinking it through.”

“It sounds to me like you’re opposed to the wedding.” Jules sank back against the leather seat. Surely she had to be jet-lagged and reading too much into his reserved demeanor and hesitant words. Perhaps she needed to be more direct. “Will you try and stop the wedding?”

Jules studied his handsome face with its aristocratic features for some indication of his thoughts. Because there was no way she’d let anyone come between Lizzie and her happiness. Over the years, when they’d fantasized about the future, Lizzie had always dreamed of meeting Mr. Right. But neither of them had ever invested much hope in those dreams. Until now. This was Lizzie’s chance to live out her dream.

Though that meant breaking up their small family and the thought saddened Jules, she refused to dwell on it. Lizzie’s happiness had to be the priority. And on a positive note, this meant Jules would at last gain her freedom to make all her own choices. They’d been making decisions together since they were kids, but now it was time they each stood on their own. And for Jules that meant making her own career choice—one Lizzie wouldn’t approve of.

And if Jules was ready to see her foster sister— her only family—move an ocean away so that she would be happy, what possible reason could Stefano find to object to the wedding? Or was she reading him wrong? It was so hard to tell—his tanned face wasn’t giving her any clues about his thoughts.

“I’m waiting for an explanation.” She crossed her arms. No way was she going to drop the subject until they sorted it out.

“Fine. I’ll admit it. I’m not a fan of marriage.”

“This particular marriage? Or just marriage in general?”

(The DeFiore Brothers) book 2

Always the bridesmaid…

Planning her sister's Italian wedding only reminds Jules Lane of how far away she is from finding her own true love. And worse, she's doing it alongside the brooding, mouthwateringly handsome best man, Stefano DeFiore.

Having seen the destructive power of love, Stefano has no time for weddings—but Jules's smile is captivating. Making her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world is one thing, but can he give this blushing bridesmaid a happily-ever-after of her own?

Dante DeFiore is passionate about life, women and the tasty Italian food he creates. And feisty American TV star Lizzie Addler is almost too tempting for him to resist!

In the scene below Lizzie has just arrived in Rome, Italy. She’s won an apprenticeship with one of the world’s renowned chefs, but things don’t go according to plan. When she shows up at the restaurant, the chef isn’t there instead she runs into his grandson, who has no time for her. But with so much riding on her success in Rome,
she’s not about to walk away…

What was it about this woman that had him feeling off-kilter?

Could it be the way Lizzie’s touch sent currents of awareness up his arm? Realizing they were still touching, Dante jerked his hand away. He clenched his fingers, creasing the hefty document.

Or maybe it was those cool blue eyes of hers that seemed to study his every move. It was as though she could see more of him than he cared for anyone to observe. Not that he had any secrets to hide— well, other than his plans to sell the ristorante.

His gaze scrolled over the first lines of the document, pausing when he saw his grandfather’s name followed by Ristorante Massimo. He continued skimming over the legalese until his gaze screeched to a halt at the mention of a television show. His gut twisted into a knot. This was much more involved than he’d ever imagined.

“You said this was for an internship. You didn’t mention anything about a television show.”

Her lips moved but nothing came out. It was as though she wasn’t sure exactly how to proceed. If she thought he was going to make this easy for her, she’d have to think again. She’d tried to get him to agree to let her work here under false pretenses when in fact she had much bigger plans.

When she didn’t respond fast enough, he added, “How long were you planning to keep that little bit of information a secret?”

Her forehead wrinkled. “Obviously I wasn’t keeping it a secret or I wouldn’t have handed you the contract.”

She had a valid point, but it didn’t ease his agitation. He once again rubbed at his stiff neck. It’d been an extremely long day.

A Moment to Love
Whistle Stop Romance, book 1
A brand new series launching this month!

Alexis Greer has just arrived in the small town of
Whistle Stop where anything can and most likely will happen...

Alexis has always been a little superstitious. She especially believed the adage that bad things come in threes. At last count, she'd incurred two unfortunate events. She was due for one more bit of bad luck...
and she has just approached Cord Lawson, Whistle Stop’s notorious cowboy, about purchasing a large portion of his ranch.

firstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfightfridayfirstfigh

“Yesterday at the store you knew who I was, but you didn’t let on.” Cord’s narrowed gaze held hers. “You make me wonder what you’re really up to.”

Gone was the kind, thoughtful cowboy who’d teased Alexis about her craving for chocolate and who’d taken time out of his day to show her his impressive stallion. She narrowed her gaze in on him. She just couldn’t make up her mind about him.

She glanced away, breaking their connection. “I didn’t know who you were at first. It wasn’t until we were on the sidewalk that I heard the ghost town mentioned and put two and two together. I tried inviting you to dinner to explain things, but you shot down my offer, more than once.”

He glowered at her. “You should have said something as soon as you realized who I was.”

No matter what she said now, he’d take exception to it. He was definitely in no frame of mind to be receptive to her plans. Time to back off and let him absorb her offer. “I’m simply offering you what no one else has, the full asking price for the land.”

“And you haven’t denied that there’s something you’re hiding from me.”

She crossed her arms, not about to be bullied into an admission. She was tired of men who thought she should cave in to their demands. First, her father and then her ex-fiancĂ©. And look where that had gotten her—her father didn’t believe she was capable of running HSG without him, and her ex had had the nerve to replace her without even bothering to tell her that they were over. Well, things would be different with Cord. Of that she was certain.

She straightened her shoulders and tilted her chin upward, meeting the cowboy’s hard stare. She refused to let him intimidate her. He’d get his answers, but not like this. Past experience had taught her that sometimes the two negotiating parties needed to part company mid-negotiation. The downtime allowed common sense to settle in before they met again and tried to resolve any lingering issues. That’s exactly what was needed here—a chance for Cord to cool down.

“You need me,” she said, knowing about his financial bind. “And when you come to that conclusion, you can reach me at the motel in town. Good day, Mr. Lawson.”

Alexis lowered her sunglasses to the bridge of her nose. Without another word, she marched down the steps. She could feel Cord’s glare poking her in the back, but she refused to acknowledge him.

Had she made the right move? Or had she taken too hard of an edge with him? Was she walking away from her only opportunity to successfully complete this project? She envisioned how the news of her failure would send her father’s heart rate soaring through the roof. Her stomach churned. She’d already come too close to losing him. She’d do her best to keep it from happening again.

The knowledge that the contrary cowboy couldn’t afford to be egotistical for long gave her some peace of mind. Soon, reality would settle in, and then the stubborn Mr. Cord Lawson would be more agreeable to her terms.

And if not…she was working on a backup plan.

A Moment to Love by Jennifer Faye

Welcome to Whistle Stop...
where anything can and most likely will happen.

The notorious cowboy meets his match...

Cord Lawson instantly distrusted the young woman in a smart suit who'd just arrived in Whistle Stop. She was very pretty and clearly a city girl--but with memories of his failed marriage still darkening his mind, he's determined to steer clear!

But she's sniffing around his land--land that has been in his family for generations. There was no way he'd let it go--even if the bank was threatening to foreclose, and even if selling could give Whistle Stop a new lease on life.

Alexis Greer had one mission--close the deal on the Lawson ranch; without it, her father's land development company would go bankrupt. But the word around town is to keep clear of Cord and to stay away from his precious land.

What had happened to cause such a handsome cowboy to live such a solitary existence?

However, determination was Lexi's middle name. She just had to keep on trying to breach Cord's barriers, to appeal somehow to his head and heart--even if it put her in danger of losing both of hers...to him.
