Montana Yuletides by my GGGrandmother Martha Edgerton Rolfe Plassmann

In an unpublished manuscript,

Montana Yuletides,

Martha Edgerton Rolfe Plassmann, daughter of Montana's First Territorial Governor,
Sidney Edgerton,
and my maternal Great, Great Grandmother,
described her memories of two Christmas celebrations,

one through the eyes of a disgruntled teen and the other through the eyes of a young mother.

In the opinion of her teenage self, Martha’s first Christmas in Montana was a decidedly unsuccessful affair:

“In Bannack our wishes were not consulted regarding what presents we would like. The merchants did not… cater to the Christmas trade. It was all they could do to provide the absolute necessities, and they often failed to supply these in winter. There were no eggs; no vegetables, no butter; and little in the food line except beef and game.

[That Christmas in Bannack] we hung our stockings as usual on Christmas Eve, but not under the mantle or before the rough stone fireplace that was our only source of warmth. We dangled [them] from some spot near the fireplace, making a goodly show. Having done our part, we went to bed with the full determination to rise betimes, which we did. It was bitterly cold-with the thermometer more depressed than it had ever been in our Ohio home. We scarcely noticed…in our anxiety to investigate the contents of our hosiery. Sitting on the floor before the bright fire that made the room fairly warm … in spots … we examined our presents. I do not remember what the other children had—their gifts did not interest me. Mine—I shall never forget—consisted of a pair of stout shoes. Was I grateful? Not a bit of it. I loathed those shoes, and the Christmas of 1863 was a distinct failure, so far as I was concerned. Like most children, I believed it to be the duty of parents to clothe their children. Shoes coming in that category, I saw no reason why I should regard them as a present!"

Her experience as a young mother in the winter of 1883, trying to please her children during a lonely isolated Christmas on the family homestead outside of Great Falls, takes a very different tone:

“In December of 1883 at the near approach of the holiday season, Mr. Rolfe was out on one of his business affairs; the weather, with its usual Montana uncertainty, becoming colder, making it doubtful when he would return. We were living in a small farm house on our homestead claim on the side of the hill above town, near the old state road. We were supplied with food, but my husband expecting to be back before Christmas had made no preparation for Christmas, nor did he leave me any money to do so. I could not walk to town, and I had two little girls and a baby to be made happy on the Day of Days. I could not disappoint them. A tree would be a delight…but there was no tannenbaum nearer than the Highwoods. I thought and thought…in front of our house we planted the previous summer two small cottonwood trees…unfortunately being unwatered, they promptly gave up the ghost. Armed with a meat saw, I attacked the shapelier of the two and soon laid it low. I then [found] some evergreen growing in draws not far away. Gathering an armful of this, I wrapped it about the dead limbs, fastening it with thread and behold! The tree was ready, but where were the ornaments, lights and toys? Once more resourceful, I brought out my rag bag. Some black silk stockings were converted into a … [doll] family, well clothed and wearing plenty of jewelry devised from discarded hat trimmings. Next came decorations consisting of popcorn together with whatever could serve the purpose from the rag bag and old hats. But who ever heard of a Christmas tree unlighted! Tallow candles cut into short lengths and fastened to the tree with considerable difficulty, provide the lighting. Bags of home-made candy and the smaller gifts hung on the tree, the rest piled at its base. The candles lighted, the door opened and the children entered; their eyes large with wonder and delight. I think they never saw a more enjoyable Christmas, and I know I never did, from witnessing their pleasure!”

Martha Edgerton, born in 1849, first came to Montana in the winter of 1863 with her parents, Sidney and Mary Wright Edgerton. In August 1876, she married fellow teacher Herbert Percy Rolfe, who became editor of the Great Falls Leader. In 1895 Herbert died and Martha assumed the editorship. In October 1895, Martha married her business manager Theodore Plassmann, but was widowed again by the following fall. Martha undertook a series of business ventures, including life insurance sales, poetry writing, and cattle ranching. She wrote articles for the Missoulian, assisted in the election of Lewis Duncan as mayor of Butte, and participated in the Missoula IWW free speech fight. In the 1920s she began writing historical articles for the Great Falls Tribune and the Montana News Association, basing many upon her own experiences. Martha Edgerton Rolfe Plassmann died on September 25, 1936, in Great Falls, at the age of 86.

My Great, Great Grandmother’s writings are one of many collections in the Montana Historical Society Research Center. I've only ever been able to research online but it is a dream of mine to one day travel there and read the records they hold of my relatives in person.

Do You Remember The Making of Us?

I Found You that Sinfully Summer, that Loving Summer, the Summer of Surrender and offered you The Illicit Love of a Courtesan. We shared One Kiss, The First Kiss and then I lost The Passionate Love of a Rake. That’s The Trouble with Mojitos, one night I was All Wrapped Up in You,
Falling in love, only concerned with if it would be Your Room or Mine, but the next morning I was Waking up in Vegas alone.

Suddenly, a knock sounded on the door.  Hope soared.  For a second, I thought you had returned until a woman called out,

Did Someone Order Room Service?

What's a Girl to Do?  Say it with Sequins: The Rumba? No, I couldn’t escape into dance and live in Sound Bites. You were The Best Thing I Never Had, well briefly had, and I couldn’t forget The Last Kiss.

My Wing Girl advised moving on, told me How to Win a Guy in 10 Dates and all about The Park Bench Test but I didn’t want to be the Manhattan Millionaire's Cinderella. Trust in Me, I knew Plus One is a Lucky Number and I wanted Loving Winter Nights with The Outlaw of Cedar Ridge
Forever.

For a chance at a Loving Christmas, a Loving New Year, and to flip through The High Street Bride's Guide
someday, I sought out The Keepers: Sienna and Archer. Through them, I learned Something Wicked separated us, how Lipstick On His Collar caused Braedric's Bane which led to Caedmon's Curse and the loss of Candra's Freedom.

Returning us to the United States of Love required braving the Forbidden. I traveled Beyond Grace's Rainbow and used Rowena's Key to find The Songbird and the Soldier. They had me listen to the Confessions of a Chalet Girl and learn all the Secrets of her Revenge.

I knew then that The Kiss Before Christmas would unleash the healing magic of true love. Decked out in my holiday best and determined not to repeat The First Christmas Without You, I confided in The Lawman of Silver Creek that my Santa Wore Leathers.  He directed me to the party for
Christmas at Thornton Hall.

I arrived On the Scent of holiday cheer, pine boughs and spiced wine, bearing A Stocking Full of Romance. As the clock struck midnight, I Found You again and, with tears of joy wetting my cheeks, asked you please Kiss Me on This Cold December Night.

And we lived happily ever after.

Why Fir Mountain?

Once upon a time long long ago or exactly twenty years ago today in a land far far away known to many as the Hood River Valley there lived a man I would come to call Bear.

He was the brother of a friend, sweet, smart and handsome.

I was the reluctant heroine.

I had failed at love and marriage wasn’t ready to try again. I had a young son of whom I was very protective. AND he was younger, darn it.

But I couldn’t stop wanting to talk to him, be near him.

I tease him now that he was like Pepé Le Pew pursuing Penelope Pussycat in a cute, non stalker way. None of the roadblocks I threw up dissuaded the man.

He persisted until we dated.

He became my best friend, my love, my husband.
Although Connelly is Irish, he had a fondness for Scottish kilts and wanted them worn at our wedding. My sister in law swore she’d read somewhere that at some point in history the Irish wore them as well but after relatives questioned that, she couldn't name her source. Why it bothered some that an American of Irish descent wanted kilts I will never know, for me all that mattered was he wanted kilts worn and so the men in our wedding party did.

A very romantic moment, our son was unimpressed.

Today is our twentieth anniversary.

Our journey together is one filled with joy, family, laughter, hard times, good times, anger, fun, happiness, stress, silliness, frustration, wounds that aren't visible and scars that are and love – most of all love.

And that meadow where we were married on a hot summer day, where we had camped while he was still trying to get my attention and later when we were officially dating,

is on Fir Mountain,

a very real and special place near Hood River Oregon.

Some days demand brownies!

The Outlaw of Cedar Ridge is published in three days.

The final countdown is both invigorating and nerve racking.

I need BROWNIES!!!

The question is should I be slightly good and have 'healthy' brownies using my own recipe below:

Maybe Brownies

1 (19 oz) can black beans, drained and thoroughly rinsed
1/2 cup oat flour
1 cup sugar or honey
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 pinch salt
2 eggs
1 ripe banana or 1/4 cup applesauce
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp instant coffee (optional)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
2 tablespoons ground flax seed
6 tablespoons water or cup of coconut or almond milk
1 cup chickpea flour
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract, optional
2 cups raw spinach
optional add dates

Cook 350 for 35 min

OR

My favorite go to comfort food in all its bad-for-you glory.

Chocolate Mint Brownies

Somewhat good, somewhat good or really really rich and so bad?

Yeah I'm going to be bad.

I got the EMAIL!

I dreamt of becoming a published author since I was a child but life put up obstacles, some unavoidable, some self created.  In 2006 when we moved for my husband’s new job, I decided to take steps to make my dream a reality.  I committed to writing daily and I joined an online community of writers.

That community kept me going through the at times painful process of improving my skills, health issues, rejections, revision requests and more rejections.  I’ve no doubt that without my fellow writer’s encouragement and support I would not have this news to share.

In September 2012, I entered the SYTYCW contest.  In November, I learned I didn’t final and received a rejection for a different manuscript.  I took the feedback from the rejection and started to revise my contest entry, intending to submit it in the best possible form.  The next week I unexpectedly got a request for the full manuscript.  I was over the moon.

Some family issues demanded my attention.  I requested time from the lovely requesting editor who graciously told me to take as much time as I needed.  In March 2013 when I was ready to submit, I learned that editor had moved on.  I submitted the story anyway and it was rejected, a form rejection which stung badly.

I pressed on and submitted my work to a number of publishers.  Then I received a life-changing piece of advice - track down the editor that had seen the potential in my story (Thank you Bronwyn!).  I discovered Charlotte Ledger had joined Harper Impulse and sent her my story.  I obsessively checked my email and in the following weeks, I received a number of ‘we like your voice but your story doesn't fit our line’ rejections from other publishers.

One very long Friday I spent hours on the road and at the hospital for pituitary testing.  (I’m fine but you can follow this link if you're curious.)  By the time I got home, I was tired and cranky and not in the mood to read another rejection so, I avoided checking my email until I was almost ready for bed.

My mouth fell open when I saw Charlotte had sent me an email that morning.  I stared at it for several minutes before I managed to click open.  She remembered me.  She liked my story.  She wanted to- OH.  My.  She wanted to call me.  Editors don’t call to reject you.  They call for...  OH.  My.

I must have made some strangled sound by that time because my husband inquired if I was okay.  I couldn't talk.  I turned my laptop, pointed at the email.

He read it.  “Isn’t that good?”

“Ah...  YAH!”

“Well then reply to her.”

I stared at him, mute, awhile then finally turned my laptop back.  I spent several nerve-racking moments composing an email I hoped wouldn't sound ridiculous.  When finished I took a deep breath and clicked send.  It was then I noticed Charlotte’s second email.  (Note to self always check all messages before responding to one.)

As I read this one, I couldn’t make a sound.  I reached out, tugged on my husband’s arm to get his attention, nodded to the screen.  Charlotte wanted to buy my manuscript!  Harper Impulse offered me a contract!

She offered the official CALL but with her in the UK and me in the USA, emails work best for me, and those left me so twitterpated that I couldn't have talked had we worked out the time difference.

I was asked to keep this quiet until they officially announced me.  It was so hard after the first shock passed not to shout it to the world.  However today it’s official, here's my announcement , and I’m so relieved that I’m finally able to share this with everyone!

Harper Impulse contracted me for two books plus a novella in Men of Fir Mountain series, and the first book, The Outlaw of Cedar Ridgeexcerpt here will be released August 15!  I can see listed on Amazon already for preorder.  OH. MY.  I keep closing the browser, opening a new tab and then searching Amazon again to see if it comes up againg.  I’m having a hard time believing it’s really happening.

Everyone who helped, critiqued, supported and encouraged me toward achieving my dream I cannot say thank you enough.

They called me a tomboy.

Who?

Everyone I knew growing up.

Why?

Because I liked making up adventures.  Barbies didn't try on outifts, they went out in the woods on spy missions.  Dolls didn't have tea parties, they were aliens sent to help humankind or destroy the cosmos depending on my mood.  I didn't just ride bikes with my sister, we were bionic women out to save the world.

Eventually I grew up but the desire for made up adventures never faded.  In my teens I developed a fondness for my mother's romance novels.  However princes and sheiks, I'm sorry, didn't intrigue me so I sought out other heroes and soon, of course, I had to create my own take on romantic adventures.  Falling in love risks your heart, daring to do so takes courage.  The journey that a romance can travel fascinates me still especially when I flavor the story with a pinch of drama, a dash of danger and  a handsome cowboy.

One mystery my imagination has never delved into is my sister's affection for shoes.  I just don't get it.  Maybe someday she could write me a story I can relate to like The Cowgirl wore Prada and I'll finally -  nah.

I'll always be a tomboy who wears my one pair of tennis shoes until they fall apart.

History plus rampant imagination = stories

I've known people who never look back and others who love the dry facts and figures of history.  I love the sense of it, the knowledge that throughout time people were like we are now, yet the setting has changed.  I'm enamored of the tidbits of personal stories passed down through our family.

Once, as we spoke of family history, my Grandma Way told me she remembered her grandmother telling her of traveling in a covered wagon.  My young adult mind was amazed.  I thought she'd then spin a tale as exciting as the movies I'd seen.  She didn't.  In fact that was all she had to say.  For her grandmother it was a simple statement of fact.  That was how they'd traveled.  I wonder will my great great grandchild be amazed I traveled by car?

My maternal grandfather, Elmer Edwin Way, was born in 1894.

{He looks quite handsome in his WW1 uniform doesn't he?}

Anyway knowing his birth date altered my paradigm.

Suddenly real people lived, loved and died in the 1800's.

Of course my imagination kicked in, spun possible stories.

All my historical romances so far,

plus the one I'm working on now

are set in 1891.

A day in the life of an aspiring author

Wake up – Almost always a good way to start the day, I find it invaluable in most situations.

Calm down the dogs - The minutes I took to dress without them have them excited to see me again.  Reminds me why I love dogs.

Feed the afore mentioned dogs.

Power on laptop.

Feed my goldfish in outside Aquaponics.

Return to computer and bravely click open email.  Remind self that no news equals no rejections.

Open work in progress.  Stare at what I wrote yesterday, grimace, and then rework it.

Receive excel worksheet from a very nice fellow writer who uses it to organize.  Enlist youngest son to help me work with it awhile.

Take a break and read online article about writers needing to build a social platform.

Log onto twitter because article reminded me I need to build on my social platform.  My mind blanks when I try to think of what to say.  I’ve read tons of conflicting advice.

I surf web for what to tweet.  Found Things for authors to tweet and 100 things to tweet

Hear my family trying not to disturb my ‘writing time’ and smile as I finally tweet then retweet cooler things others sent out. Remind myself I need to learn how to tweet a picture.

Log onto my Facebook author page, stare at it a moment then remember I know how to post photos on it and upload one.

Pat myself on back for building on my social platform.

Worried now I spent too much time on my platform and not enough actually writing, click off my browser and return to my story outline which needs work.

Time passes.  Brain starts to melt.  I save what I've created, get up, and interact with my family – what can I say they’re cute.

In the evening, the quiet night hours, that’s my favorite time to write which is when I wrote this post for my blog.

Now it’s time to return to my story...

Some interesting facts about Oregon settlers

Like Ben and Evie Rolfe in The Outlaw of Cedar Ridge (click the link to read and excerpt) people traveled to Oregon hoping in search of better conditions and/or opportunities, to escape from problems or wanted adventure.

Pioneers often slept under their wagons because the wagons were full of their possessions.
They cooked by campfire using iron pots and skillets, often they cooked only in the evening and ate cold leftovers for breakfast and lunch.

They ate food that didn't spoil.  Beans and rice, dried meat, salted bacon, dried fruit, hardtack.  They took flour and sugar and sometimes baked bread or biscuits.  They drank coffee, tea and many families took along a milk cow for fresh milk and butter.  They hunted for fresh meat and traded with natives for fish and vegetables.

Traveling in wagons back then was bumpy.  The wagons had no springs.  The dirt roads were full of potholes and bumps, were muddy when it rained and dusty when it didn't.

The Outlaw of Cedar Ridge ran through Salmon Idaho

According to the United States Department of Agriculture

"The Frank Church-River of No Return is a wilderness of steep, rugged mountains, deep canyons, and wild, whitewater rivers. The Salmon River Mountains, located south of the Main Salmon and west of the Middle Fork, are the most massive range, and dominate the Wilderness. North of the Main Salmon River are the Clearwater Mountains, east of the Middle Fork are the Bighorn Crags. The Salmon River Canyon is one of the deepest gorges in North America, deeper even than the famous Grand Canyon of the Colorado in Arizona.

The lead forest for managing the coordination of the Wilderness is the Salmon-Challis National Forest, located in Salmon, Idaho. "

I see the world as endless possibilities.

Throughout my life, frustrated and amused teachers, friends, and family members have and I’m certain, will comment on my tendency to daydream.  I often drifted off in class, still do on car trips, in the midst of various activities and, at times, even during conversations.

Daydreams are a playground for my vivid imagination. Sitting in a classroom, listening to a boring teacher lecture in a monotone would send my mind off in search of entertainment.  What if we were really on a spaceship, maybe recovering from a world war or were refuges from another world and his monotone was a spell to protect us from... wait or maybe he’s using it to enchant us...  In an hour-long class, I could come up with some far out scenarios.

While playing with what if answers helped me escape boredom countless times, I'm just as likely to drift off in the company of amazing and/or entertaining people.  They do or say something interesting, one spark and my mind builds a fire.  Everyone and everything in some fashion has or will be fodder for the flames.

Inspiration for my stories is born from my boundless imagination because I see the world as endless possibilities.

Log cabin facts

A flat stone was often placed in each corner to give them a foundation.

A man could build a small one all by himself in weeks, sooner if he had help.

Doors were usually built to face south to allow sunshine in during the day.
